Founded by Rodger Upton, Ironwood Clay Company Inc. (ICCI) is the world’s leading supplier of Glacial Oceanic Clay and a specialized OEM manufacturer of clay-based products. Offering this mineral-rich clay in its purest form, ICCI has earned a reputation for unparalleled quality, innovation, and sustainability over its 36 years of operations.
ICCI’s journey began when, in 1988, Rodger was presented with a serendipitous opportunity to negotiate a contract for an American company interested in buying the unique clay found on BC’s coast. Though the negotiation didn't go as planned, Rodger decided to take the leap and harvest the clay himself. Starting with a makeshift operation involving cement mixers and repurposed containers, Ironwood Clay Company was formed.
Rodger’s early days involved physically demanding work, digging clay in harsh conditions and learning the industry quickly. However, his resourcefulness and determination paid off very quickly, enabling the company to scale up operations significantly.
Today, ICCI extracts clay using advanced equipment and processes, bringing down large quantities efficiently with minimal ecological footprint. They not only supply clay, but have expanded their offerings with an in-house brand, “NENA” offering a wide range of products, from sunscreens to serums.

ICCI's success is rooted in the exceptional clay, rich in more than 60 minerals and rare earth elements, and its dedicated team. The company's commitment to certifications and quality has attracted high-level clients globally like Boots, the Body Shop, Rexall, and many more.
Despite fierce competition in the skincare industry, ICCI has set itself apart through continuous innovation, including developing a process to create mineral-rich water from glacial clay.
Beyond financial success, Rodger measures achievement by the happiness and commitment of his team. ICCI has a close-knit team of around 40 staff members, many of whom have been with the company for over a decade. Rodger says “If you can wake up in the morning and feel good about coming to work every day and feel good about the family that you have in your facility, that’s what success is.”
Looking ahead, ICCI is focused on expanding further globally, showcasing the unique properties of BC’s glacial clay, and continuing to innovate in the skincare industry. Their journey from a small, makeshift operation to a global skincare provider and supplier is an inspiring story that embodies the spirit of entrepreneurial success.
